Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is a site to educate women about their role in the narratives of pop culture, is her brainchild. She also serves as the director of operations. Dispelling stereotypes of women is her primary goals. In addition, Sarkeesian discusses issues of specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups that are excluded. Sarkeesian holds a bachelor's degree in social thought and politics from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as to the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender identities and feminisms from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while studying at the University. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s determined to make the series of videos on the internet to examine the gender representations in games. However, she became the victim of online harassment. The attack did not stop her, rather it strengthened the determination of feminist media critic. Her many notable contributions in the feminist field were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization which studies the portrayals of women within pop media stories.
